When homeowners think about improving their outdoor space, it's easy to assume that bigger projects will deliver bigger results.
A custom pergola. A large water feature. An elaborate lighting plan.
But more expensive doesn't always mean more valuable.
In fact, some of the most costly outdoor upgrades can create additional maintenance, limit future flexibility, and even make a home less appealing to future buyers.
It's a topic that has been getting more attention lately. In a recent Martha Stewart article, Renovation Sells Co-Founder and COO Amanda Valente shared her thoughts on the outdoor upgrades homeowners should think twice about before investing.
The Problem With Highly Personalized Design
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is designing their outdoor space around a trend or aesthetic that may not age well.
"In general, making overly personalized exterior design choices will end up compromising your resale efforts down the line," says Valente. "Think carefully before you commit to a bold exterior paint color or highly specific design choices."
That doesn't mean your outdoor space can't reflect your personality.
It simply means that permanent features deserve a little more thought than decorative elements that can easily be changed later.
More Features Often Mean More Maintenance
Large water features, complex lighting systems, and other elaborate backyard additions often look great in photos.
The reality can be different.
Many require ongoing maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and upkeep that homeowners don't fully consider when making the initial investment.
As Valente notes, oversized water features have become increasingly popular, but they're often expensive to maintain and highly specific to individual tastes.
Before adding a major feature, it's worth asking whether you'll still enjoy maintaining it five years from now.
Where We'd Focus Instead
If you're looking to improve your outdoor space, we'd generally recommend investing in timeless, versatile improvements such as:
Thoughtful landscaping
Healthy lawns and planting beds
Quality outdoor lighting
Functional gathering spaces
Durable materials
Strong curb appeal fundamentals
These improvements tend to have broader appeal, require less maintenance, and contribute to a more welcoming outdoor environment.
