If it feels like more homeowners are investing in their kitchens right now, you're not imagining it.
At Renovation Sells, we're seeing homeowners stay in their homes longer and become more intentional about where they invest their renovation dollars. Rather than taking on the cost and uncertainty of moving, many are choosing to improve the home they already have, and the kitchen is often the first place they start.
That trend was recently highlighted in a Forbes article featuring Renovation Sells Co-Founder and COO Amanda Valente, along with a kitchen transformation completed by our Northern Colorado team.
The numbers back it up. According to a recent Thumbtack survey, kitchen remodels are up 67% year-over-year, while cabinet refinishing and repair is up 42%, countertop projects are up 31%, and cabinet painting has increased 11%.
"We're seeing homeowners across the board staying in their homes longer due to rising costs and less homes on the market than ever," says Valente in the article. "Many homeowners have the mindset that if moving isn't realistic, they can at least tap into their existing equity to make thoughtful improvements they can enjoy right now."
Why the Kitchen?
The kitchen has always been one of the hardest-working spaces in the home, but today it's doing even more.
According to the same survey, 62% of homeowners regularly socialize with friends and family in their kitchens, while 45% use the space to pay bills or manage schedules and 43% use it for hobbies or personal projects. At the same time, nearly half say they don't have enough storage, while others cite poor layout, flow, or insufficient countertop space as frustrations.
It's no longer just a place to cook. It's a gathering place, a workspace, a homework station, and often the center of daily life.
When a kitchen no longer functions well or feels outdated, homeowners notice.
You Don't Need a Full Remodel to Make an Impact
One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that a kitchen needs to be completely gutted to feel fresh and updated.
In reality, some of the most successful projects focus on strategic updates rather than complete overhauls.
"Updating cabinets is one of the simplest ways to elevate your kitchen on a budget," says Valente. "Those older wood cabinet tones quickly date a space, and adding a fresh coat of neutral paint will make it feel open and current."
She also notes that natural wood is making a comeback, making refinishing existing cabinetry an increasingly popular option.
"It provides a great return, giving the kitchen a cohesive, updated look without the expense of a full remodel."
Countertops can also have a significant impact when selected thoughtfully.
"Upgrading your countertops isn't always necessary, but if you have the budget, it can be worth the investment, especially if you plan to sell down the line," says Valente. "Quartz and natural stone are our go-to's because of their durability and the variety of options available."
A Northern Colorado Kitchen Transformation
This kitchen was completed by our Northern Colorado team and is a great example of how strategic updates can completely transform a space.
Rather than tearing everything out and starting over, the project focused on thoughtful, high-impact improvements including cabinet updates, fresh finishes, improved lighting, and new countertops.
The result was a kitchen that feels brighter, more functional, and more aligned with how homeowners want to live today.
It's proof that you don't always need a massive renovation to create a dramatic difference.

Thoughtful Improvements Are Replacing Major Overhauls
As homeowners continue staying in their homes longer, we're seeing a shift away from large-scale renovations and toward intentional improvements that maximize both enjoyment and value.
People aren't necessarily looking for bigger homes. They're looking for homes that work better for the way they live.
And often, that starts with the kitchen.
As Valente shared, "You don't need to complete a massive renovation to make an impact. A few strategic upgrades can make a meaningful difference."
For many homeowners, those small, thoughtful upgrades are proving to be well worth the investment.
